Meet The Team

Heather joined Smiles by Design in July 2023 as a dental receptionist. Heather is the mother of 2 and a Kernersville native. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling and outdoor activities. Heather’s personality makes her an asset to our team.

Jessica joined Smiles by Design in July 2020. Jessica graduated with honors from the Guilford Technical Community College Dental Assisting Program. She received her certification in 2020 after completing the three Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) exams in radiography, Infection Control, and chairside dentistry. Jessica looks forward to making relationships with our patients.

A Kernersville native joined Smiles by Design in May 2018. Lisa earned her dental hygiene degree at GTCC in 1990. Lisa brings 28 years of dental hygiene experience to our practice. Lisa looks forward to meeting our patients and seeing new patients.

Amy-Jo Fischer, DDS has been a resident of Kernersville since 1985.  She grew up in St. Joseph, Missouri, where she attended Central High School and was Co-Valedictorian.  She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia, as a Curator Scholar.  From there, she attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, receiving her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1985. While at UNC, she served as president of her dental fraternity, and received the Kermit Knudtzen Award for outstanding service, and the Academic Achievement Award from the fraternity.   After graduation, Dr. Amy was employed by the NC Department of Corrections, and worked in another private practice, before establishing Smiles by Design in 1995.

Dr. Amy feels that treating the person rather than just the teeth is very important.  She enjoys working with patients of all ages, getting to know them and their families. She also believes being involved in the Kernersville community is very important.  After a battle with breast cancer ten years ago, Dr. Amy founded the Kernersville Pink Ribbon Rally Fund, which includes an annual fundraiser to help breast cancer patients with their non-medical expenses.

Dr. Amy is a member of the American Dental Association, the North Carolina Dental Association, and the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce.  She has traveled to Honduras as a member of the UNC Dental Brigades, and volunteers regularly on the NC Baptist Men’s Dental Bus.

Dr. Amy’s interests include membership and involvement in Eastern Star, gardening, cooking and smocking. She loves traveling, especially to the beach, and most of all, time with her family.

Courtney joined Smiles By Design in January, 2015 as a Certified Dental Assistant II. She graduated in 2008 from UNC Pembroke with a BS in Exercise Science. Courtney received her certification and training in Dental Assisting at Piedmont Dental Assistants in 2009 at Pleasant Garden, NC.  She has over 6 years of experience and enjoys the relationships with the patients.

Jill joined Smiles By Design in  2013. She has over 30 years as a medical and dental office manager, collections, accounts receivable and insurance billing. Jill is a Kernersville native and her personality and knowledge make her an asset to the practice.

Cindy joined the Smiles By Design team in 2004 as a dental receptionist and became Practice Administrator in 2012. Cindy has previous career experience in medical administrative and insurance billing, retail and banking. She assists our patients with their treatment plans, insurance pre-determination of benefits and finance options.  Cindy’s willingness to multi-task makes a valuable staff member for patient care in both the clinical and front office areas.

Angie joined Smiles By Design in January, 2012 as a Certified Dental Assistant II. She received her certification in 1993 at Elon University. She worked at Winston-Salem Dental Care for 23 years where she received her training. Angie is a Kernersville native. Angie helps calm our patients as she assists in their restorative procedures.

In 1999, Tanis joined Smiles By Design’s clinical staff. She graduated from Guilford Technical Community College, and is a licensed dental hygienist. She worked for Winston-Salem Dental Care from 1988 to 1999. Tanis is a Kernersville native. Tanis enjoys seeing many of her former patients here in Kernersville for their dental needs.

Lori has been a part of the Smiles By Design clinical staff since 1996. She is a licensed dental hygienist, and she received her degree from Guilford Technical Community College. After graduation, she worked for Winston-Salem Dental Care for 5 years prior to joining our staff. Lori is a Kernersville native. Lori has many loyal patients who trust her care and advice.
